Their jerky rhythms and catchy riffs are offset by stream-of-consciousness lyrics set in an alternate “Weird Tales” universe. Known for their frenzied live performances and on-stage antics, they leave audiences both bewildered and aroused. Body Double -from Oakland, CA -Led by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Candace Lazarou, Body Double examine authenticity and identity with shape-shifting post-punk that never wavers in its intensity. On their 2020 debut album, Milk Fed, the Oakland, California band borrow from and build on the legacies of Wire, Berlin-era Bowie, and Tones on Tail, blurring the lines between passion and detachment on songs that mirror the disorienting times in which they were made. The daughter of a Marine, Lazarou spent her childhood and adolescence moving from country to country, an alienating experience that led her to seek out Oakland, California's underground art and music scene. In the early 2010s, she played with the post-punk outfit Pang, who recorded a handful of singles before calling it a day. Her next project, the noise-rock band Mansion, released a self-titled 2014 EP and the 2015 full-length Early Life, then disbanded in 2016, shortly before the Ghost Ship fire devastated the Bay Area's counterculture. Looking for a fresh start, Lazarou took some time to get sober and hone her songwriting voice. In 2017, she began recording what would become Body Double's debut album, with co-producer Jason Kick, playing most of the instruments except drums (she recruited former Mansion drummer Jeff Cook and Silver Shadows' Chase Kamp to handle those). Eventually, she connected with bassist Noah Adams, and Body Double's lineup soon grew to include Kamp, guitarist Jascha Ephraim, and keyboardist Mel Weikart. After starting to play live shows in 2019, the band released their first album, Milk Fed, in September 2020 on Zum Records. Moms With Bangs -from Novato, CA -Jazzercised is the debut studio album from sweaty, slippery meat-enthusiasts Moms With Bangs (Leo Hirsch, Austin Kennedy, Will Roth, Michael Cook). We tried recording this thing ourselves twice until we realized frankly we don't know how to do this and moseyed our little asses on over to mister Julian Kindermann, who not only did it very well, but did it on his fancy 1/4 inch tape machine! The result is an exhilaratingly dirty, disgusting, ferocious, towering monster of sonic exploration that we hope shakes you to your fucking core, but also makes you say "I like this music". |
