When offered their first show, the group took their name from the block-long sign on the warehouse across the street. Strangelight -from Oakland, CA -“We’ve been playing together for about five years, and a solid year and a half of that was just spent texting each other dumb jokes during (you know what time),” says vocalist/guitarist Nat Coghlan. “The genesis of the band goes back to Julia and I meeting over 20 years ago outside of 924 Gilman. She ended up joining my old band, Transistor Transistor, on a European tour. From there, we stayed in touch and had the idea to do a very stripped down, garage rock two-piece. I wrote the songs, sent them to her, and she recorded drums for them in an afternoon when her other band, The New Trust, was on tour in Boston. “We always thought the songs were cool, but never did anything with them, in part because we never lived in the same state. Cut to 2018, I move to California; Julia moves back to California, and she says that we should get together and play those songs. I couldn’t remember them, so we ended up playing through what would become ‘Heaven’s Parking Lot.’ Julia made it pretty clear that we were doing this. Whatever “doing this” meant exactly.” “When we first were introduced to each other, the first thing we talked about was The Simpsons and Mr. Show. The collective response was: Hell yes, we all think the same things are funny. I think this goes back to everyone having spent time playing in bands already. Liking the same records and wanting to play the same music isn’t enough to make a band work. Even if you’re weekend warriors, you end up spending a lot of time together. And the majority of that time is not spent playing music. I’m sure we could all find a group of people who like The Wipers and Hot Snakes who I wouldn’t want to talk to for more than two minutes. On our recent run of shows throughout the Pacific Northwest, we dedicated a lot of time in the van talking about what life would be like if you married The Noid or the 7-UP Dot. For me, that commitment to idiocy is the real core of this band. It’s important to find people who take what you’re doing seriously without taking yourself too seriously.” -Nicholas Senior, NNM The Sunset Shipwrecks -San Francisco, CA -Unrepentant Rock and Roll from the fog belt. [as of 10/28/2024] Previously scheduled show (Year Of The Cobra) was rescheduled to Saturday March 8 2025.
