December 16 2013 7:00PM doors -- music at 7:30PM ••• ALL AGES $12 in advance / $14 at the door Midlake midlake.net/ Indie Psychedelic Folk rock Sarah Jaffe sarahjaffe.com/ indie ~ singer-songwriter Midlake McKenzie Smith, Paul Alexander, Eric Nichelson, Eric Pulido, Jesse Chandler, and Joey McClellan. -From Denton, Texas. -The lo-fi rock quintet Midlake were formed in Denton, Texas, in 2000 by a group of musicians who had attended the North Texas School of Music together. They issued their own EP, Milkmaid Grand Army, in 2001, and sold 1,000 copies at their Texas gigs. They attracted the attention of Simon Raymonde, who signed them to his Bella Union label in the U.K., leading to European concerts and the recording of the first full-length album, Bamnan and Silvercork, which was released in 2004. It would be followed up by 2006's more 70's-influenced The Trials of Van Occupanther, which had a sound reminiscent of harmony-rich soft rock bands like America, Neil Young, and Gene Clark. 2010 saw the release of their album The Courage of Others, and in 2012 they began work on their fourth album. During this time, lead singer and songwriter Tim Smith decided to leave the band and formed a new project, Harp. Undeterred by his departure, the remaining members returned to the studio and scrapped two years of work to start from scratch. Eric Pulido was installed on lead vocals and new members Jesse Chandler and Joey McClellan joined the outfit. In October 2013, they released their new album, Antiphon. This new album and new sound is both an invocation of past digressions and a stylistic leap of faith for the group. Pulido's vocals and lyrics, though less brooding than his predecessor's, blend seamlessly with the music, retaining the harmony-laden, 70's pop sound the band is famous for. Under this new direction, Midlake has shifted towards a more electrified indie rock sound that feels spacey and expansive, complementing nicely the earthy, grounded folk rock of their previous albums. With their repetoire and experience ever-growing, Midlake is exceptionally well-rounded and fleshed-out, producing a musical experience that is both moving and invigorating. Sarah Jaffe -From Denton, Texas. -From her first self-released EP in 2009 to her latest album, The Body Wins, released last year, Sarah Jaffe has grown and progressed in leaps and bounds. With her latest release, she releases a blast of pent-up energy, upbeat and fun, yet grounded by her experiences gained on her debut tour. In her latest musical development, Jaffe's performance has a pulse to it- more than a heartbeat, yet not quite a breakbeat. Her sound is filled with tones of discovery and progression, influenced by her learning to write for bass and drums. Her music is melodic and weighty, with driving rhythms that don't overpower her signature vocals. The addition of violin on a number of her songs brings a lush, sweeping sound to the mix, complementing the often staccato rhythms. Straddling the line between indie rock and party rock, Sarah Jaffe brings moving, thoughtful lyrics with pulsing rhythms and heavy beats. Her talent and experience mix elegantly with her musical development, making for a powerful and exciting performance. |
