Davidson was born in Arizona and has also lived in Oregon and California. Dear Nora has existed in two distinct eras – 1999-2008 and 2017-present – with roughly a decade break in the middle. Dear Nora's early music leans more pop-punk, DIY, confessional, youthful. The contemporary music leans more poetic, expansive, genre-bending. The through-lines between the two eras are: melodic hooks, vocal harmonies, and lyrics about time, space, capitalism, ancient things, real vs. surreal, and all kinds of relationships. Partially because Dear Nora's early years happened before the rise of smartphones and social media (prior to hyper digital documentation), and because very little content survives this era aside from the analog recordings, the group is often described as "legendary" (as in, "legend/myth"). Rediscovered via streaming platforms and word of mouth, Dear Nora's music has influenced many young songwriters. The band's following is somewhat small and devoted – very cult status. The lineup for SF Popfest will feature several key collaborators: Marianna Ritchey (2000-2002), Jake Longstreth (2000-2002, 2004-2006), Antonio Roman-Alcalá (from 2003-06 ish including the jam band era), and Zach Burba (from 2017-present even though he's been spiritually around from the start). Jeanines -from Western MA -Over the course of nearly a decade making music as Jeanines, Alicia Jeanine and Jed Smith have charted a distinctive course through the history of pop, evoking influences as varied as the 60s folk of early Fairport Convention and Vashti Bunyan, the sunshine pop of Margo Guryan and Laura Nyro, and indiepop touchstones like Dear Nora, Marine Girls, Dolly Mixture, and the post-Black Tambourine projects of Pam Berry. Their new album, "How Long Can It Last," finds Jeanines grappling with themes of personal upheaval and self-excavation, adding weight to their finest set of songs yet. With Alicia's lyrics incisively interrogating connections, ruptures, and time and its reverberations, songs like "Coaxed a Storm," "What's Done Is Done," and "On and On" combine richly melodic tunes with multi-instrumental producer and co-composer Jed's crisp arrangements (featuring contributions from longtime live show bassist Maggie Gaster) to stellar effect. The Kitchenettes -from San Francisco, CA -The Kitchenettes are a San Francisco Band formed by Morgan (The Umbrellas, Telephone Numbers), Emily and Sequoia (The Snogs) in their garage. Their songwriting is collaborative and intuitive, yielding patchwork pop songs with heart and charm. The group's combined sensibilities and vocal styles evoke 80's and 90's indie pop and by-gone girl bands. Favoring melody and feeling, The Kitchenettes write songs that'll stick in your mind." Pillow Fight -from Los Angeles, CA -Pillow Fight is an Indie Pop band based in Los Angeles. Adam writes melodic pop songs in the Indiepop tradition influenced by 60s pop and girl groups with a C86 punk spirit. The project started when Adam posted a bedroom demo single, Open Up that caught the attention of local musician friends Jorge and Bre and then the band was formed. Studio singles Jean Said and Secret Crush were released in 2025 and were hailed as instant twee pop classics by those who heard them. A noise pop holiday single, Christmas Time was released at the end of the year. A full length album is in the works. |
