Birthed from the sand, the surf, and twilight campfires down in Ocean Beach, Sonny & the Sunsets’ busted beach-pop songs spark recollections of doo wop's otherworldly despair, a dose of goofball humor from the Michael Hurley school, and positive possibilities exuded by Jonathan Richman. Kelly McFarling -from the Bay Area, CA -Kelly McFarling grew up riding the prolific RnB radio stations and lady folk waves of Atlanta, GA in the early 90's. This incubation translated to a songwriter anchored in melody, metaphor and potent observation. McFarling began playing original songs in the Bay Area as an adult and quickly became known for her dynamic live show. She spent the next decade touring and releasing music independently, earning a devoted following as a versatile indie-folk singer-songwriter known for spacious arrangements and deep grooves. Garnering comparisons to Laura Marling, Bonnie Raitt, and JJ Cale, McFarling’s voice anchors her lush six-piece band as they explore her deep catalogue of music. Her current iteration features a lush band of Bay Area beloveds; Featuring Kelly McFarling (vox, keys, guitar) Andrew Brennan (guitars), Tim Marcus, (pedal steel) Nick Cobbett, (drums) Brittany Powers (vocals, acoustic guitar), and Danny Vitali (bass). Her latest release, Bed of a River (2022), was recorded in Richmond, VA at Spacebomb studios, and finished at home in California. The album is a collaboration with Andrew Brennan in writing, arranging, playing, recording, and living. The record features the Spacebomb house band; Cameron Ralston (bass) Alan Parker (guitars) Pinson Chancelle (drums) Daniel Clark (keys) with production by Matthew E White. Additional recording with Jeremy Harris at Panoramic Studios in Stinson Beach, CA with Nick Cobbett (drums) Tim Marcus (pedal steel) Danny Vitali (bass) Brittany Powers (vocals), and Jeremy Harris (Keys). Other releases include Distractible Child (2010), Ridgeline (2013) Water Dog (2017), Deep the Habit (2021) McFarling has played in and toured with various projects in the Bay Area and beyond; including Y La Bamba, Skywayman, Scott Hirsch, Goodnight, Texas, Sonny and the Sunsets, Terry Reid, Con Brio, and more. Noelle & the Deserters -from San Francisco, CA -Noelle & The Deserters bring South-Western honky tonk from the high deserts of New Mexico to the golden hills of California. Fronted by singer-songwriter Noelle Fiore, their music draws inspiration from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Marty Robbins, J.J Cale, Gene Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and the great outlaw country players. The Deserters include seasoned players Graham Norwood (Bryan Scary)(Graham Norwood solo) (guitar), Alicia Vanden Heuvel (The Aislers Set)(bass), David Cuetter (Tarnation)(pedal steel), and Jerry Fiore (Sonic Love Affair)(drums), all based in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Noelle was raised in Taos, New Mexico. As a guitar player and vocalist, she was a founding member of Sweet Chariot, singing and playing guitar/ banjo. Later, she and Tim Cohen (The Fresh & Onlys) founded the band Magic Trick, recording four full length albums for labels Hardly Art and Captured Tracks. Noelle is also a current member of the Shannon Shaw Band, on guitar and vocals. High Desert Daydream is Noelle & The Deserters debut album, out May 31, 2024 on Speakeasy Studios SF. The songs on the album, written by Noelle, touch on life in the west, growing up in Taos, living in California, songs of love, memory, marriage, work, good times, and bad times. Like all classic country music, the songs are infused with a sense of real-life struggles and living life in the everyday. Noelle’s incredible voice carries the album, and her songs are at once moving, powerful, tender, humorous, and intimately relatable. |
